Providence Health & Services Coder 1 - Newberg Medical Center in Newberg, Oregon
Providence is calling a Coder 1 (1.0 FTE, Days) to Providence Newberg Medical Center.
Please note this is not a remote coding position. This is an onsite position working Monday - Friday business hours.
We are seeking for a Coder 1 who will review of outpatient provider services to support coding optimization and compliance for the medical group. This is an entry level position supporting multiple specialties across the medical group with coding for evaluation and management and procedural services. In addition to the audit and review work, the Coder 1 will work side by side with outpatient providers providing ongoing feedback, coaching, and support with the code entry process, documentation, ICD-9, ICD-10, and HCC coding in alignment with current medical group reimbursement requirements.
In this position you will have the following responsibilities:
Code identified diagnosis and procedures following national and PHS coding guidelines. Uses Code Correct, Coding Institute Coding Alert, and current ICD-9/ICD-10 and CPT manuals.
Select principal diagnosis and procedure in accordance with coding standards, CMS requirements and knowledge of prospective payment systems.
Read and interprets all documents contained in the medical record to identify all diagnosis and procedures.
Consult with providers/staff for clarification when conflicting or ambiguous information is recorded.
Enter all missing charges into EPIC system, with careful attention to adding notes to clarify clinic charges on a non-clinic charging system.
Revise order of all charges with correct ICD-9/ICD-10 diagnosis at time of charge entry, ensuring proper order of diagnosis codes.
Communicate with Manager and/or Projected Benefit Obligation (PBO) regarding changes in patient charge entry and related issues to aid in complete and accurate billing of Medicare, insurance companies and patients.
Perform audits for accuracy of coding and provides direct feedback and coaching to physicians to ensure documentation meets the requirements for codes selected.
Act as a daily resource and provides ongoing training to physicians to ensure optimization of coding, including coding updates and new codes and HCC coding for managed care populations.
Work with clinic staff to reduce billing and coding errors, including identifying Epic build issues that prevent appropriate coding and charge capture.
Remain informed of office policies and changes in coding practice and regulatory information.
Comply with all applicable Federal, State, and local laws, regulations, and requirements as well as PH&S policies and procedures in all aspects of job performance. Promptly incorporates required changes into work activities.
Maintain confidentiality of all patient demographic, medical, and financial information, ensuring proper handling and disposal of confidential documents and adherence to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
Required qualification for this position includes:
H.S. Diploma or equivalent
Working in a medical office or physician billing office, or equivalent office experience.
Proven history of proactively identifying, resolving and escalating issues that impact business and documentation outcomes.
A track record in organizing and planning with demonstrated ability to effectively manage time and achieve results in a fast paced environment.
American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) certified coding credential
Preferred qualification for this position includes:
Electronic Medical Record (EMR) experience.
Experience working with physicians, with an emphasis on coaching and communication.
Experience coaching and training physicians.
